Volunteer positions are available for Ozarks Technical Community College’s Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) classes, which will be held this spring in the following counties: Greene, Stone, Taney, Christian, Webster, Polk, Dallas and Laclede. Volunteer schedules vary by location. Most volunteers average two to three hours of work per week.
AEL volunteers assist instructors in preparing adults for the high school equivalency test. Volunteers work one-on-one with students in a variety of academic subjects including math, language arts and reading. Volunteers may also assist AEL instructors with any clerical or record-keeping needs in the classroom.
AEL volunteers must possess a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma. Prior teaching experience is not required, and free training is provided. Volunteers should also possess the following traits: patience, optimism, friendliness, a sense of humor and the desire to make a difference in someone’s life.
Persons interested in becoming an AEL volunteer may contact Kathy Funk, literacy coordinator, at 417-447-8865 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
The results, released Oct. 19, 2017 at the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, showed the college contributed $234 million to the regional economy during the 2015-16 year.
